Culture phenomena: Hispanics & Diabetes in the U.S. (Post 5)

STATS:

  • The Hispanic or Latino population is the largest minority group in the United States, currently representing 13.7% of the total U.S. population.
  • Hispanics or Latinos usually suffer from higher rates of type 2 diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, and their multiple vascular complications.
  • Inadequate nutrition and reduced physical activity in the setting of an increased genetic predisposition to type 2 diabetes have contributed to the inexorable rise in metabolic abnormalities in Hispanics in the United States, which now affect many children and adolescents.
How does cultural phenomena/politics intersect with diabetes and hispanics?
  • It is evident that multiple medical, cultural, and socioeconomic factors influence the development of diabetes, its course, and its consequences. However, our health care system is barely prepared to face the challenge of managing diabetes in this high-risk group. Why?
For starters knowing the difference between Latino or Hispanic...For example: I am from Guatemala, making me Guatemalan; Hispanic.

So what now?
  • Healthcare providers need to spread awareness, provide culturally oriented clinical care, education, outreach and research programs to better identify the challenges and to create opportunities to improve the lives of Hispanics or Latinos with diabetes or at risk for the disease.

  1. Thank you so much for bringing awareness to this. I never knew that Hispanics and Latinos have a higher rate of diabetes two. My family if from Panama and a good amount of my family members deal with some type of diabetes and it's something that I have to keep in mind at all times. I agree that there needs to be more education and cultural competency when it comes to health issues that are specific to certain minority groups.

  2. When reading your statistics I learned a lot I did not know before like that we are the largest minority group. The inadequate nutrition maybe for those who do not make enough for there cost of living. For example, it is easy to buy fast food and not cook because you can spend less money. Going out to eat use to be known as a treat for something but now it is just because fast food is cheap. Buying something off a $1 can fill you up faster then buying vegetables and that is sad. It should be the opposite and maybe diabetes would not be increasing.

  3. I did not realize it was such a huge prevalence in the hispanic community until I read your blogs. Thanks so much for taking a step toward bringing awareness and reducing this burden of disease. I think health care providers should take more initiatives in involving the public about such matters. When they see someone at risk or someone belonging to a community at risk then they should take further steps to eliminate any possibilities of diabetes among the patient in their recent future. They should also advocate healthier and nutritious diet especially for children so the prevalence can be reduced starting early with the new generation.
